She kept it tied to a tree in a field during the day and went to fetch it every evening. One evening, however, the lamb was missing. The rope had been cut, so it was obvious that the lamb had been stolen.
When Dimitri came in from the fields, his wife told him what had happened. Dimitri at once set out to find the thief. He knew it would not prove difficult in such a small village. After telling several of his friends about the theft, Dimitri found out that his neighbor, Aleko, had suddenly acquired a new lamb. Dimitri immediately went to Aleko's house and angrily accused him of stealing the lamb. He told him he had better return it or he would call the police. Aleko denied taking it and led Dimitri into his backyard. It was true that he had just bought a lamb, he explained, but his lamb was black. Ashamed of having acted so rashly, Dimitri apologized to Aleko for having accused him. While they were talking it began to rain and Dimitri stayed in Aleko's house until the rain stopped. When he went outside half an hour later, he was astonished to find that the little black lamb was almost white. Its wool, which had been dyed black, had been washed clean by the rain!

The Walkman has become a new fashion on campus. I had long dreamed of owning a Walkman. The more Walkman owners were on campus, the stronger my desire became. Finally, during one of my monthly visits home, I appealed to my parents to let me buy one, "Dad, mom, I...I want to buy a Walkman... the one for..."
I swallowed the rest of my words. Did I really need to explain what a Walkman was? Surely everybody knew!
At first there was no response from my parents. But my little brother responded eagerly, "Me too!"
Then finally my dad spoke, "what! What is it for? This little stuff breaks down soon after you get it! It's an absolutely useless expense..."
Then, I had an idea. When the summer vacation came, I lied to my parents that I couldn't stay home, because the school had supplementary programs. As a result, my part-time job earned me a handsome Sony Walkman that summer.
I was at home the night before my new school when mom came into my room. She sat on my bed, and patted me on my shoulder. Then she handed me a small parcel. "Take this. Don't tell your father...Now, study hard, okay?" she whispered.
"Mom, how did you...?" I asked.
“It's from my own savings. Your father doesn't know.” I sat alone for a long time with my new Walkman, weeping silently.
I wrapped up the Walkman carefully when I went back to school. I decided to give up my part-time job so that I could study harder for my parents, for my dream. My motivation to study has never been so strong.
On another day, I was studying in my dorm, when a classmate told me that my father was waiting for me downstairs. I ran downstairs anxiously, worried that something had happened at home, as my father had never come to see me at school before. But he handed me a parcel, and stammered, "Hold this...good for study, eh...Everything is fine at home...Don't call us too much, if not necessary..." After asking me about my study and my health, he left.
I sat down and unwrapped the parcel. I was stunned to find a brand new Walkman inside. It was neatly packed, the price tag still attached. Suddenly I broke down in tears.
29. From paragraph 5 we can infer the character of the writer is .
A. clever B. practical C. hardworking D. disappointed
30. Which of the following facts touched the writer most?
A. Her brother wanted to own a Walkman too.
B. Her father refused to buy a Walkman.
C. Her father bought her a Walkman at last.
D. Her mother bought her a new Walkman with her own money.
31. It can be inferred from the passage that______________.
A. The writer would share the Walkmans with her brother.
B. the writer must make good use of the Walkman.
C. the writer was sure to work harder at her lessons to satisfy her parents.
D. the writer didn’t like a Walkman any more from then on.

Apples are the second most valuable fruit crop in the United States, after oranges. Autumn is a time when fresh apples are everywhere. They are not native to the country. Research shows that apples came from Central Asia. But they are believed to have been grown in America since the early 1600s.
Washington State produces the country's biggest apple crop. New York and Michigan are also big producers. Among nations, China is the biggest grower followed by the United States and Turkey.
This year, American growers expect to harvest nearly four thousand five hundred million kilograms of apples. That is a little less than last year's record harvest.
Apples are a member of the rose family. Apples come in red, green and yellow colors. About two thousand five hundred kinds grow in the United States. Three times that number are grown around the world.
In the United States, three fourths of apples are eaten fresh. Some are made into sweet foods like apple pie. The rest are processed to make products such as apple juice, apple cider, apple sauce(酱汁) and vinegar.
A popular saying goes: "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." Apples are a healthy food. For one thing, they are high in fiber, mainly in the skin.
John Chapman was born in Massachusetts in 1774,who was an early American hero. He grew apple trees on land he owned in Ohio and Indiana. He traveled with settlers as they moved West. He supplied them with apple seeds and young trees and, it is said, religion. Later, he was known to almost everyone as Johnny Appleseed.

D. Johnny Appleseed became famous as a churchman

3. Basic safety.

3. Basic safety.
It’s easy to let your guard down when you travel. After all, you’re more relaxed and there are so many new sights to focus on.
