Mary and her husband Dimitri lived in the small village of Perachora in southern Greece. One of Mary's prize possessions was a little white lamb which her husband had given her. She kept it tied to a tree in a field during the day and went to fetch it every evening. One evening, however, the lamb was missing. The rope had been cut, so it was obvious that the lamb had been stolen.
When Dimitri came in from the fields, his wife told him what had happened. Dimitri at once set out to find the thief. He knew it would not prove difficult in such a small village. After telling several of his friends about the theft, Dimitri found out that his neighbor, Aleko, had suddenly acquired a new lamb. Dimitri immediately went to Aleko's house and angrily accused him of stealing the lamb. He told him he had better return it or he would call the police. Aleko denied taking it and led Dimitri into his backyard. It was true that he had just bought a lamb, he explained, but his lamb was black. Ashamed of having acted so rashly, Dimitri apologized to Aleko for having accused him. While they were talking it began to rain and Dimitri stayed in Aleko's house until the rain stopped. When he went outside half an hour later, he was astonished to find that the little black lamb was almost white. Its wool, which had been dyed black, had been washed clean by the rain!
21. Where did Mary find the little lamb missing?
A. in the village. B. in the field. C. in a forest. D. in the backyard.
22. Why did Dimitri apologize to Aleko after accusing him?
A. because they were neighbors for years

The Walkman has become a new fashion on campus. I had long dreamed of owning a Walkman. The more Walkman owners were on campus, the stronger my desire became. Finally, during one of my monthly visits home, I appealed to my parents to let me buy one, "Dad, mom, I...I want to buy a Walkman... the one for..."
I swallowed the rest of my words. Did I really need to explain what a Walkman was? Surely everybody knew!
At first there was no response from my parents. But my little brother responded eagerly, "Me too!"
Then finally my dad spoke, "what! What is it for? This little stuff breaks down soon after you get it! It's an absolutely useless expense..."
Then, I had an idea. When the summer vacation came, I lied to my parents that I couldn't stay home, because the school had supplementary programs. As a result, my part-time job earned me a handsome Sony Walkman that summer.
I was at home the night before my new school when mom came into my room. She sat on my bed, and patted me on my shoulder. Then she handed me a small parcel. "Take this. Don't tell your father...Now, study hard, okay?" she whispered.
"Mom, how did you...?" I asked.
“It's from my own savings. Your father doesn't know.” I sat alone for a long time with my new Walkman, weeping silently.
I wrapped up the Walkman carefully when I went back to school. I decided to give up my part-time job so that I could study harder for my parents, for my dream. My motivation to study has never been so strong.
On another day, I was studying in my dorm, when a classmate told me that my father was waiting for me downstairs. I ran downstairs anxiously, worried that something had happened at home, as my father had never come to see me at school before. But he handed me a parcel, and stammered, "Hold this...good for study, eh...Everything is fine at home...Don't call us too much, if not necessary..." After asking me about my study and my health, he left.
I sat down and unwrapped the parcel. I was stunned to find a brand new Walkman inside. It was neatly packed, the price tag still attached. Suddenly I broke down in tears.

D. Her mother bought her a new Walkman with her own money.
31. It can be inferred from the passage that______________.
A. The writer would share the Walkmans with her brother.
B. the writer must make good use of the Walkman.
C. the writer was sure to work harder at her lessons to satisfy her parents.

Apples are the second most valuable fruit crop in the United States, after oranges. Autumn is a time when fresh apples are everywhere. They are not native to the country. Research shows that apples came from Central Asia. But they are believed to have been grown in America since the early 1600s.
Washington State produces the country's biggest apple crop. New York and Michigan are also big producers. Among nations, China is the biggest grower followed by the United States and Turkey.
This year, American growers expect to harvest nearly four thousand five hundred million kilograms of apples. That is a little less than last year's record harvest.
Apples are a member of the rose family. Apples come in red, green and yellow colors. About two thousand five hundred kinds grow in the United States. Three times that number are grown around the world.
In the United States, three fourths of apples are eaten fresh. Some are made into sweet foods like apple pie. The rest are processed to make products such as apple juice, apple cider, apple sauce(酱汁) and vinegar.
A popular saying goes: "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." Apples are a healthy food. For one thing, they are high in fiber, mainly in the skin.
John Chapman was born in Massachusetts in 1774,who was an early American hero. He grew apple trees on land he owned in Ohio and Indiana. He traveled with settlers as they moved West. He supplied them with apple seeds and young trees and, it is said, religion. Later, he was known to almost everyone as Johnny Appleseed.
32. Which state in America produces the most apples?
A. Indiana    B. Washington C. Michigan. D. New York.
33. We know from the passage that        .
A. there are nearly 6,000 kinds of apples in the world
B. apples spread to other parts of the world from Turkey
C. China grows more apples than any other country
D. Johnny Appleseed became famous as a churchman
34. The fifth paragraph is mainly about        .
A. the eating habits of Americans
B. the popularity of American foods
C. the use Americans make of apples
D. the major steps in processing apples
35. The saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” really means       .
A. apples are a necessary part of people’s diets
B. apples usually are most doctors’ favorite fruit
C. apples are very effective in fighting diseases
D. apples contain a lot of nutrition in them

Traveling Tips
Whether you're taking a quick trip with your family or studying abroad for several months, it's easier to get sick when you're in a new place because your body hasn't had a chance to adjust to the food, water, and air in a new environment.   36   Here are some tips on keeping your travel experiences as healthy as possible.
1. Keep healthy.
The stress and excitement of travel can make you more likely to get sick, but if you follow a few simple tips, you’re more likely to stay healthy throughout your trip. Contact your doctor or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for a list of necessary vaccinations (疫苗接种).   37    Therefore, the first thing you should do if you’re heading overseas is to find out what kinds of vaccinations you’ll need in advance.

So what foods are safe to eat? Any foods that have been boiled are generally safe. Avoid eating uncooked or undercooked meat. Stay away from foods that require a lot of handling before serving.
What about drinks while traveling? Many experts suggest you drink only bottled water when traveling. If you need to use tap water, you should boil it or purify it first.    39
3. Basic safety.
It’s easy to let your guard down when you travel. After all, you’re more relaxed and there are so many new sights to focus on. In addition to paying attention to your personal safety, you’ll need to reset your thinking when it comes to traffic safety, too.    40   In some countries, people drive on the opposite side of the road and you’ll need to be aware of this before you cross the street.
A. Different countries have different requirement.
B. Safe foods and drinks.
C. Altitude sickness (高原病) is caused by a decrease in oxygen.
D. Even if you’re brushing your teeth, take steps to ensure the water is safe first.
E. Practice these healthy tips and you can focus on the scenery not the medical emergencies.
F. The rules of the road aren’t the same overseas as they are at home.

Mr.Bean is an   61  (international) recognized comedy character on TV and in films. His humor is always made clear through a series of simple and funny acts that rely purely    62   body language.
One of my favorite shows is that Mr.Bean has a meal in a fancy restaurant. After a moment,he looks back at the envelope but this time he looks surprised,as if he did not know   64   was there. He opens it to find a birthday card and delightedly puts it on the table for everyone to see.
After that he takes all the money out of his wallet, counts it and puts it in a saucer(茶托). Then he orders a dish called “steak tartare”.When the dish   65     (arrive),he is shocked to discover that “steak tartare” is actually raw hamburger. He makes an attempt    66    (eat)it,but it is clear that he finds the taste truly disgusting. He cannot hide his feelings, except    67    the waiter asks if everything is all right. When this happens,he smiles and nods,   68     (indicate)that everything is fine. When the waiter is not looking, however, he busies himself hiding   69   raw meat anywhere he can reach. M: You don’t understand. My grandmother’s name is Flora, (14) and she named all her daughters after flowers. (15) You can’t buy roses for my aunts. You can only buy roses for my mother, because her name is Rose.
W: So, for their birthdays, you buy flowers for each of them that match their names. That is a cute tradition.

W: Deal! (16)

I’m here today to announce a new product. This is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. Here, seen in public for the first time, is Susie the Robot! Susie can do many different things. She can be your alarm clock and personal planner. She can help you at home with dinner or cleaning. She can walk the dog, drive a car, (17) and make coffee. She can also answer the telephone, set the table, and water the plants. You can program her to speak six different languages, and she can even teach you how to speak three of them! (18) Susie can connect to the Internet at any time, so don’t be afraid to let her check your Facebook! In order for Susie to do her best work, she needs to be turned off and charged at night, or for at least 10 hours a day. She can run up to 14 hours without charging. (19)
